Chapter Six

He watched from the bushes as the king and his filthy dog mate bathed in the river yet again. It was bad enough he wanted the king dethroned, but the beast had to go and mate a dog. Pure blood should rule the throne.

What if the dog became pregnant? The thought made him shiver in disgust. Lansing didn’t deserve to be king. He was weak and selfish, thinking only of his needs. He even went so far as to allow the dogs to roam the village as if they had a rightful place there.

It was clear to him now that his plans had to change. Not only was it Lansing and Fjord who needed to die, but also the wolf shifters who would ruin everything he had worked so hard for.

He slowly moved back, hiding behind a tree as the king looked his way. Lansing may not be fit to rule the pride, but stupid he was not. The king seemed to be very protective of his little abomination. If he caught someone watching them fuck, there would be no end to Lansing’s fury.

He would have to be more careful in the future so as not to be caught. He had been planning and working behind the scenes too damn long to give up now. Too bad that damn arrow missed the wolf last night.

* * * * Lansing stood on the porch of the longhouse, staring off into the village. It weighed heavy on his mind that someone had tried to kill his little wolf. Peace had reigned here for many years, as far back as Lansing could remember. It disturbed him that someone from his very own pride was attempting to kill his mate.

“All seems well,” Emyd said as he joined Lansing at his side. Lansing cut his eyes at Emyd and then looked back out over his village. “All is not well. Someone tried to murder my mate. Until I find out who that person is, I will not rest.”

Emyd cleared his throat as he stepped from the porch, walking down the steps with his hands behind his back. “Things have gotten too complicated, sire. Since when do we care what happens to pets?”

Lansing roared as he came off the porch, his hand circling around Emyd’s neck. “My mate is not my pet! Call him one again and I will drown you in the river.”

He pushed Emyd away from him in disgust. The man stood there rubbing his throat, glaring at the ground. Lansing could tell the lion wanted to say more, but knew better.

“As you wish, King.” Lansing growled as he walked away from Emyd before he truly harmed the lion. He had never before thought of his pride as bigoted, but some were proving him wrong.

“ Sire,” a few villagers sang out as Lansing roamed through his village. The king sighed. Why couldn’t everyone act like they were born with common sense? What was there to fear about the wolves? The lions would not harm the wolves.
